Dental Extraction
As specialists in oral surgery, one of our main procedures is third molar extraction surgeries and addressing retained teeth. Our methodologies encompass the various tissues of the oral cavity, ensuring comprehensive care.
We prioritize your comfort and safety throughout these procedures, recognizing that every patient deserves a pain-free experience. Our goal is to enhance your overall experience by minimizing discomfort and reducing healing time, ultimately aiming for your optimal well-being.
We perform two main types of dental extractions
Simple Dental Extraction
When your tooth is visible above the gum line but damaged or broken, we can assess the situation with X-rays to determine the best approach.
If the damage is severe or if there are cavities that cannot be addressed with a root canal, a simple extraction may be necessary.
In some cases, such as with wisdom teeth or to create space for corrective orthodontic treatment, children or teenagers may also require tooth extractions.
Following the extraction and your recovery period, we can discuss replacement options if necessary, such as implants or other devices, to restore your smile and maintain your oral health.
Surgical Dental Extraction
When your tooth is not visible, as is often the case with wisdom teeth, removal could be required in certain scenarios. This includes tooth crowding, a discrepancy in size between the teeth and the jaw, impacts, or their eruption at an angle or partially above the gum line, which may require a surgical extraction.
During surgical dental extractions, it’s common for the tooth to be fragmented into multiple pieces for easier removal.
Screening for wisdom teeth typically begins in late adolescence, as partially developed teeth can become impacted. The emergence of wisdom teeth can exert pressure on neighboring teeth, leading to discomfort or misalignment.

Dental fillings
During the procedure, the dentist removes the decayed or affected portion of the tooth and fills the area with a durable material, such as composite resin, amalgam, or porcelain. This not only restores the tooth’s structure and function but also prevents further decay and protects against sensitivity.
Dental fillings blend seamlessly with natural teeth, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional support for a healthy smile.
Bone Grafting
It’s performed in order to minimize hard and soft tissue loss after a tooth extraction. Preservation of sockets through bone grafting (with or without a membrane) typically results in a reduction of ridge width by an average of 2 mm less, a decrease in ridge height by 1 mm less, and an increase in bone volume by approximately 20% compared to sockets that were left ungrafted.
All grafting products are NOT created equal. The graft material used should facilitate the three tenets of bone regeneration:
- clot stability
- space maintenance
- blood supply/bone-forming cells
At CIMA Oral Surgery, we choose the best quality materials to provide scaffolding space maintenance as well as stabilizes the blood clot, that is why we use Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen (Geistlich Pharmaceuticals) for all bone grafting procedures.
Sinus Lifting
We’ll meet with you the day before the surgery to discuss the procedure’s risks and benefits thoroughly. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you may have and review all available options before making a decision.
On the day of the procedure, we’ll begin by making an incision along the gum line where the rear teeth were located. Once the incision is made, we’ll gently lift the gum to expose the underlying bone surface.
Using a specialized tool, we’ll create a small oblong-shaped window in the bone, providing a clear view of the sinus. The sinus membrane will then be carefully moved upward and away from the jawbone. After lifting the sinus, graft material will be inserted into the space to promote jawbone growth.
Once the graft material is in place, we’ll close the gum with a few stitches. Ample time will be allowed for healing, and a few months later, the implants will be placed. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to ensure that the healing and growth process is proceeding as planned.
Dental Cleaning
Patients’ cleaning needs vary depending on their oral health condition.
We begin with either a standard dental cleaning or a supragingival cleaning, depending on your needs. A supragingival cleaning effectively removes stains, yellowing, tartar (calculus), and plaque buildup above the gum line. Additionally, upon request, we can conduct an Oral Evaluation/X-rays to identify areas requiring further attention and to prevent periodontal disease.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar above and below the gumline, ensuring thorough cleaning to the base of the pocket, which represents the space between gum tissue and tooth attachment and ideally measures one to three millimeters deep. To minimize discomfort, we numb the gums and tooth root with local anesthesia.
Following Scaling, root planing smooths tooth roots to aid gum reattachment and removes hard tartar buildup, which may temporarily make teeth feel loose. However, the procedure itself does not loosen teeth; instead, it provides a clean surface for gum reattachment. Post-treatment, expect numbness from anesthesia followed by mild gum tenderness.
Root Surface Debridement
Root Surface Debridement is a powerful treatment for skin wounds, particularly effective when combined with good oral hygiene.
Unlike Root Planing, which targets only the root surface, Debridement removes foreign material and dead or infected tissue, allowing the healing process to restart. While full mouth debridement requires prior removal of plaque and calculus for a thorough oral evaluation, it cannot be performed on the same day. Expect minor side effects such as sore gums, temporary sensitivity, and shrinkage lasting a few weeks after the procedure.
Gum Surgery and Grafting
At CIMA Oral Surgery clinic we also offer dental procedures that improve gum health and appearance.
When gums appear bright red, bleed easily, or feel swollen, it often indicates gum disease. This condition arises when food particles mix with bacteria to form plaque, which hardens into tartar if not removed by brushing and flossing. Tartar accumulation can irritate gums, leading to gingivitis. As plaque extends below the gumline, the body’s immune system reacts, causing periodontitis and potential jawbone deterioration.
Symptoms of gum disease include persistent bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, loose teeth, altered taste sensation, or mouth sores. Prompt attention to these signs is crucial to prevent further gum disease progression and preserve oral health. Gum surgery treats gum-related issues such as gum disease by removing excess gum tissue, cleaning tooth roots, or reducing pocket depth to restore gum health, reduce inflammation, and prevent tooth loss.
In cases of gum recession, gum grafting is necessary to cover exposed tooth roots, alleviating sensitivity, lowering the risk of decay, and addressing aesthetic concerns. In this procedure, gum tissue is taken from one part of the mouth, usually the palate, and transplanted to areas with gum recession or where additional gum tissue is required. This technique is utilized to cover exposed tooth roots resulting from recession, which helps reduce sensitivity and the risk of decay. Various types of grafts are employed based on the specific requirements of the patient.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatments, or endodontic procedures, are essential for saving infected or damaged teeth. They are recommended when the pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected due to decay, trauma, or other factors. Without treatment, the infection can spread, leading to severe pain and tooth loss. During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection. This procedure not only relieves pain but also allows you to keep your natural tooth, maintaining the health and function of your smile. If you’re experiencing tooth pain or sensitivity, don’t wait – schedule your root canal treatment today to preserve your oral health.
Root canals are exclusively performed on permanent teeth, not on children’s primary teeth. Damaged primary teeth may require a pulpectomy instead.
The Root Canal Procedure
But what if the initial treatment doesn’t fully resolve the issue?
During retreatment, we remove infection, clean and shape the canals, and place temporary filling materials. After the tooth has healed, typically requiring another visit, anew crown or restoration is placed to protect it.
Periapical Surgery
Root canal therapy can fail in various situations, prompting the need for alternative treatments. Periapical surgery is one such option, allowing the removal of a periapical injury while preserving the affected tooth, particularly in cases unresolved by conventional root canal treatment. This surgical procedure is conducted under local anesthesia.
The primary goal of periapical surgery is to achieve tissue regeneration around the apex of the tooth (periapex). This involves removing the entire periapical lesion through curettage and root apex resection, as well as ensuring proper sealing of the root canals to prevent re-infection and exposure to irritants, thereby minimizing the risk of recurrence.
Over time, different classification systems have been developed to determine which cases are suitable for periapical surgery and which may benefit more from retreatment with root canal therapy.
Braces
Dental braces are orthodontic devices used to align and straighten teeth, improving both their appearance and function. They are recommended for patients with crooked, crowded, or misaligned teeth, as well as those with bite issues such as overbite, underbite, or crossbite. Braces work by applying continuous pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position.
Overall, dental braces are a highly effective treatment for correcting alignment issues and improving your oral health and confidence. Whether you choose traditional braces, self-ligating braces, or invisible aligners, braces can help you achieve a straighter, healthier smile. Schedule a consultation with us today to learn more about your options for braces and start your journey to a beautiful smile!
Traditional braces
These consist of metal brackets that are bonded to the teeth and connected by wires and ligatures (rubber bands). They are effective for correcting severe alignment issues and are often the most affordable option.
Self-ligating braces
These braces use brackets that have a built-in mechanism to hold the archwire in place, eliminating the need for ligatures. This allows for quicker adjustments and may reduce discomfort.
Aesthetic braces
They are available in both conventional and self-ligating types, closely match the color of your teeth, making them ideal for patients seeking discreet braces since they are virtually unnoticeable.
Invisible Aligners
Invisible aligners are custom-made, heat-formed plastic guards designed to gradually move your teeth. This treatment option offers exceptional comfort, allowing you to consume all types of food while maintaining good oral hygiene practices. Additionally, invisible aligners are incredibly convenient and easy to use. One of their primary advantages is their nearly invisible appearance, making them an appealing choice for individuals seeking discreet orthodontic treatment.
Occlusal Guards
At our clinic, we offer custom-made occlusal guards, crafted with precision using a 3D printer, to alleviate symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues. These guards are tailored to combat various symptoms that may indicate a need for their use:
- Headaches and ear pain
- Discomfort when opening or closing the mouth
- Teeth grinding or clenching during sleep
- Audible clicking or deviation of the jaw when opening
- Dental wear and diminished tooth size
- Difficulty closing the mouth after yawning or laughing
- Fatigue while chewing hard or tough foods
If you experience any of these symptoms, a mouthguard may be recommended to address your TMJ-related concerns effectively.
Crown Lengthening
Crowns provide vital support to natural teeth in dentistry. However, in cases of severe decay or chipping, proper crown fitting may require crown lengthening.
This procedure is performed in the dentist’s office as an outpatient treatment. Local anesthetics ensure comfort during the procedure, with mild sedation sometimes used depending on the severity of the damage and treatment duration. The dentist begins by cleaning the area thoroughly and then gently cutting back the gums to expose the bone and roots. A salt water solution is applied to cleanse the area, and small sutures secure the area to complete the process.
